Chapter 2

Liam

I hate to admit it, even to myself, but I’m feeling out of my depth. It’s not a feeling I’m familiar with. I’m used to being the one in control, the one with a cool head, assessing a situation and reacting swiftly – all key skills when you’re a private investigator. The agency my brother Finn and I started several years ago wouldn’t have been a success if we weren’t cut out for the job.

France, though… Look, I’m not cosmopolitan. I’m not well travelled. This is the furthest I’ve been from Dublin and I’m not used to being somewhere I don’t speak the language. Bursts of French come from all around me, interspersed with other languages as tourists make their way towards the Eiffel Tower, which pokes up behind some trees.

I’m not here to sightsee. I’m here because Caitlin O’Malley came to me in tears last week, and I’m a sucker for a damsel in distress.

“I think Danny’s cheating on me,” she said between sobs, twisting her wedding ring round and round her finger. “Please, Liam, I have to know for certain.”

I know Caitlin from way back when. We were friends at school, but I hadn’t seen her in years – not until she walked into my office and begged me to get proof of her husband's infidelity. I figured it would be a standard job, some surveillance and taking photos, until she revealed her husband often travels to France on business.

Hence Paris. City of lovers. I feel bad for Caitlin, but it looks like her suspicions are right. I’ve been following her husband for a few days now and he’s rarely on his own. The woman at his side is petite, blonde, and stunningly good looking.

I move around the fountain, trying to get a better angle for my shot and pretending I’m just another tourist, when a kid on a skateboard shoots past, the wheels grating noisily. I look up in annoyance and notice a woman in a wedding dress standing by the edge of the fountain. I frown, wondering where the groom – hell, her entire wedding party – has got to.

The skateboarder yells something, gliding past a bit too close, and she stumbles backwards, her knees hitting the rim of the fountain. I see her eyes widen and I react instinctively, surging forward and grabbing her arm.

She jerks, a startled cry slipping from her lips, but I’ve got her. I tug her upright again and she clings to me, shaking. “Thank you,” she gasps, blinking up at me with big brown eyes, her lashes long and curved.

“Don’t mention it,” I say. “An unexpected dip would’ve ruined your big day, huh?”

She swallows. “I think I already ruined it.”

That statement is so intriguing that I don’t immediately let her go. “What do you mean?”

She gives a nervous laugh, reaching up to tuck a loose curl behind her ear. “Um. I may have just run out on my fiancé?”

“Fuck,” I say succinctly. Between this and Caitlin’s cheating husband, I’m starting to think Paris isn’t the place for romance after all.
